Pillars Of Gaming: Mechanics That Drive People To Action [Future Of Gaming]

PSFK’s Future Of Gaming report is intended to provide a current snapshot into the innovative ways that games are being used within the broader marketplace, examine their expanding role in effecting change on an individual and societal level, and highlight the new technologies that are making these experiences possible. Pattern recognition performed against our research yielded 17 key trends organized around three core aspects of game design — Purpose Behind the Game, Mechanics That Drive People To Action and Game Functionality and Systems.

Mechanics That Drive People To Action

Because games can only be successful if people are willing to participate, developers are tapping into some of the core motivations behind human behaviors and integrating these mechanics into the structure of game play. Whether rewarding players with game currency and increased status or embedding a layer of social competition and feedback, these systems are incentivizing people to take action and stay committed.

Motivations Driving In-Game Participation

One-Upsmanship

Peer Pressure

Money On The Line

Rewards

Exclusive Access

Key Implications

* Integrate social accountability into the context of the game, enabling friends and family to help motivate players to complete their goals. ...

Stephen Hawking Looking For Personal Techie

kaptink writes "One of the great grandmasters of space, time and the history of our existence is seeking an assistant to help develop and maintain the electronic speech system that allows him to communicate his vision of the universe. An informal job ad posted on Stephen's website said the assistant should be computer literate, ready to travel and able to repair electronic devices 'with no instruction manual or technical support.' He lost his real voice in a tracheotomy in 1985, but has something based on NeoSpeech's VoiceText speech synthesizer mounted on his wheelchair that helps synthesize speech by interpreting the twitches of his face. The synthesizer's robotic monotone has become nearly as famous as Hawking himself, but the computer — powered by batteries fastened to the back of Hawking's wheelchair — isn't just for speaking. It can connect to the internet over mobile phone networks and a universal infrared remote enables the physicist to switch on the lights, watch television, or open doors either at home or at the office. It's a complicated, tailor-made system, as the ad makes clear. A photograph of the back of Hawking's wheelchair, loaded with coiled wires and electronic equipment, is pictured under the words: 'Could you maintain this? If your answer is "yes", we'd like to hear from you!'. Hawking's website says that the job's salary is expected to be about $38,500 a year."

Sea snails help scientists explore a possible way to enhance memory

Efforts to help people with learning impairments are being aided by a species of sea snail. The mollusk, which is used by researchers to study the brain, has much in common with other species including humans. Neuroscientists have used this animal model to test an innovative learning strategy designed to help improve the brain's memory and the results were encouraging.

Social networking service offers a ‘secret place’ for couples

In recent months we’ve featured not just one but two technology-based tools focused on relationship management, and recently we came across one more. Hailing this time from South Korea, Between is a mobile social network that aims to offer a “secret place” in which couples can privately communicate and share.

Whereas Facebook and most other social networks aim to help users share with friends and relatives far and wide, VCNC’s Between targets audiences of two people instead. Between apps are available for free for both Android and iPhone in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Using them, couples can share their memories out of sight of the rest of the world. Users can build a one-to-one archive of materials including chat history and photo albums, for example; they can also share a customized message board. A “virtual memory box,” meanwhile, organizes and presents a couple’s treasured memories. All data is encrypted for security, and instant notifications alert partners to the arrival of new material.

Is the social networking space saturated at last? We’re betting not. Keep the innovations coming!

Wikipedia To Dump GoDaddy Over SOPA

Reader jampola points out that Wikimedia's Jimmy Wales last week said clearly what was only hinted at earlier in the month; now "It's not only imgur (among many others) who are giving GoDaddy the flick; it also appears Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikimedia, will be making the change. While unsure to what effect Wikimedia utilizes the services of GoDaddy, I imagine this could very well be another public blow for GoDaddy in the wrong direction over their decision to support SOPA."
